I have walking problems with my MS. Now, my legs are out of practice and I can't really walk with a cane. I use my walker when I am going to bed (good for chair charging) and getting around during the night should I need to. I read in yesterday's PARADE addition about a new invention, ReWalk, that can help one to walk again. The walker has a "bulky" pair of leg braces to strap one’s legs in and an 8- to 10-pound backpack holding a computer and battery. Motors are in the brace pieces at knees and hips area that provide the power needed for walking, standing up, ascending stairs, descending stairs, just standing and sitting down. Six things I don't have power to do. I am pretty good about just sitting. With a backpack accessories and a key pad (wallet-sized) on the wrist to direct the braces to perform any of the six functions, I would be pretty mobile around the house. The training would have to come first but then there is the cost of this mobility tool. This tool needs to be approved by FDA then expected to go on the market next year. "Every time I see a patient rise from a wheelchair and walk, I am thrilled all over again", says Dr. Alberto Esquenazi, Temple University Hospital MossRehab, Philadelphia. |
