Clinical Trials and MS

I would like to take this time to talk with you about clinical trials. I don’t know anything first hand about them but I am reading about them in the Summer 2009 issue of Momentum magazine.  All the trial volunteers are doing their work for me, you, and so many others.  Thank you from my soul and heart and feet which carries the bruises of time.  This work will see us through until a cure is found.  I get excited when I read about fingolimod is only one of many oral therapies in trails today.  As the number of clinical trials grows, we are getting closer and closer to winning the war against MS.

Before a new drug can be tested in humans, there must be solid rationale to the answer why it be helpful.  Years of research goes into experiments on lab animals and results are found encouraging from the testing of the drug. Phase I lasts for several months before drugs can be rated usable by humans.  Phase II lasts several months to several years with more participants with MS. Phase III and Late Phase III/Phase IV suggests that research isn’t over yet.

The studies generally compare A to B and other drugs; long term safety and impact on the patients’ quality of live.  Let’s not forget the costs.  As the modern day expenses increases, so does health insurance and life-saving drugs. These MS drugs are prohibitively expensive with insurance let alone without it.  If you are not getting good support while taking the MS drugs, call the national Society for help.  Their number is 1-800-344-4867.
