This is the Savannah Campaign that General W. T. Sherman conducted just before 1865 during the Civil War. Sherman and Ulysses Grant hoped that the Civil War would end if they could break the Confederates ability to engage successfully Union troops. Grant joined Sherman in scorching and burning the crops and killing livestock. This worked to destroy the civilian infrastructure along the way. Grant had a second objective: there was a stalemate against Robert E. Lee’s army in Virginia. By moving in Lee’s rear, Sherman increased pressure on him to allow Grant the ability to break through. Sherman’s armies worked on destroying the railroads and manufacturing and agricultural infrastructure of the state. For more information, go to |
