FAQs about MS

Fall 2003 MS Outlook

Patient—Three years after I was diagnosed with MS, to was discovered I had rheumatoid arthritis.  A year later I was diagnosed with a thyroid disorder. After talking with others in my support group, we thought there might be a connection. Is it true that a person who has one autoimmune disease is more susceptible to others?

MS Outlook—Your story is not uncommon.  Several studies support the idea that certain genes may act as risk factors for the development of autoimmune diseases in some people with MS. One study estimated the prevalence of other autoimmune diseases in the MS population at 5%.  … Among those with MS the most common association appears to be with autoimmune thyroid disease.  A study by the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota found that out of 17 different autoimmune diseases studied, the only one significantly associated with MS was autoimmune thyroid disease.

Can you relate?  I can't personally but I know of others who have gone to doctor after doctor to find out what's wrong with them ... and I thought I had it rough. Mine was a clear cut diagnosis.  A few ifs and/or buts but since I had an uncle and cousin get MS why not join them.
